The Measurable Student Outcomes of Summit Learning in Action

The Summit Learning approach to teaching and learning is based on developing three key, measurable student outcomes: Cognitive Skills, Content Knowledge, and Habits of Success.

To bring these outcomes to life, we worked with three juniors at Blackstone Valley Preparatory High School (BVPHS) in Cumberland, Rhode Island to create a video on each student outcome.

In the videos below, learn how Summit Learning has helped each student grow and thrive within these outcomes — from developing oral presentation skills for life, to better understanding a desired career path in biology, to finding an advocate’s voice on national issues.

Cognitive Skills

Cognitive Skills are essential and transferrable lifelong skills such as collaboration, communication, and critical thinking, which are needed for college, career, and life success.

In this video, student Charlotte shares her path to developing confidence in giving oral presentations and growing as a person.

Content Knowledge

Content Knowledge is the understanding and application of complex and challenging facts and concepts. It helps students understand and navigate not only academic subjects, but the world around them.

Student Cesar tells how learning about finches sparked curiosity and helped him develop self-direction. Cesar’s love of science also has him envisioning his college and career path.

Habits of Success

Habits of Success are the mindsets and behaviors that support well-being and develop purpose. They help students develop a strong sense of self; build relationships; take initiative in planning their own learning outcomes; and navigate the complexity of the world to make informed, responsible decisions.

Watch and learn how student Daniella, a first-generation college student, found her voice and burgeoning sense of purpose in speaking out on national issues that matter deeply to her.

A special thank you to BVPHS and students Charlotte, Cesar, and Daniella for sharing their Summit Learning stories. BVPHS was one of the first Summit Learning schools to implement the Program in 2015. A public charter school located in Cumberland, Rhode Island, BVPHS serves about 300 students in grades 9-12, with the primary goal of setting all students up for a successful path to college. We are honored to have BVPHS in the Summit Learning Program!

Since offering the Summit Learning Program to schools across the U.S. beginning in 2015-16, more than 330 Summit Learning schools have adopted the Program and made it their own. The results are a growing number of stories and case studies of students becoming self-directed learners and acquiring the skills, knowledge, and habits they need to succeed not only in the classroom but also in college, career, and life.

This post is the part of a series about current Summit Learning schools. This series showcases Summit Learning in action and brings to life the mind shift happening in schools across the country.
