Kids love the summer. To them, it means no school or homework.
To you, it means they can lose up to one month of academic-calendar learning over the summer. Experts call it the Summer Slide. The good news is there’s something you can do to prevent it from happening!
There are plenty of nationwide Summer Reading Challenges that keep learning fun and top-of-mind. Encouraging your child to join the fun can help build a sense of community they might not get over the summer.
Here are some of our favorite Summer Reading challenges for all ages
Scholastic: Read-A-Palooza
For 18 weeks, kids can enter their summer reading minutes to unlock rewards. They can also complete weekly reading challenges, access book excerpts, videos, and other fun learning content.
Penguin Random House: Brightly Summer Reading
Brightly is a Penguin Random House company that gives parents tips on how to raise kids who love to read. Their summer reading list and tips include everything from captivating novels to picture books and funny audiobooks for all ages.
Barnes & Noble: Book Your Summer
Explore curated reading lists for every interest and age. Starting in June, Barnes & Noble also has a YA Book Club the meets every 2nd Thursday of every month.
Common Sense Media: Summer Reading List
Common Sense Media is a nonprofit that rates and recommends kid-friendly entertainment and technology. They compiled a summer book list using the most common books teachers suggest to read over the summer. You’ll might recognize some of the classics you read as a child.
We Are Kid Lit Collective: IPOC Summer Reading
We Are Kid Lit Collective is a nonprofit that works to create materials and opportunities that recognize Indigenous and People of Color (IPOC) in youth literature. Find reads that celebrate diversity, inclusivity, and more.
Another way to get your child excited about Summer Reading is to speak their language. Encourage them to share what they’re reading on their favorite social media outlets with friends.
