Summit Learning: “A Philosophy that Focuses on Developing 21st Century Skills”

The Summit Learning community has thousands of teachers who are working hard to ensure their schools start the academic year on the right path. Questions about what the return to school will look like – whether it’s operating in-person, remote, or on a hybrid schedule – is confounded by the usual inquiries families have for their new teachers.

What will this school year look like? How is my child going to be graded? What is Summit Learning?

These are questions that teachers face every Fall, and some teachers are finding unique ways to answer them. Jeff Lima, a math and science teacher at Woodland Park Middle School in Woodland Park, Colo., created a video series that explains what his classroom will look like this year and how Summit Learning will help him achieve his vision of education.

Mr. Lima referred to Summit Learning as a “philosophy of education that focuses on the development of 21st-century skills.” In the video series, Mr. Lima explains how the program allows teachers to do things that educators such as Mr. Lima have always wanted to do as a teacher.

Mr. Lima’s series consists of 11 videos that explain what communities should know about Summit Learning, from how educators take on the additional role of mentor and teach through real-world projects.

Mr. Lima put this video series together because he believes “students do better when they feel confident about how the learning process works and how they are graded.”

“Parents are more likely to know what to expect for the upcoming school year when they fully know how their students will be learning and why teachers are doing what they’re doing,” Mr. Lima said.
